We used brown paint to represent the mud in this wonderful story book. This activity heightened the children's understanding of the story and was a great sensory exercise as the painted squelched between their little toes! We emphasised to the children that they were stepping 'through' the mud/paint and that they couldn't go 'over' it or 'under' it, thus giving much more meaning to the language in this story.
